Pelling Itinerary: A Simple 2 Day Plan with Travelling Tips

Pelling is one such place that does not ask for attention. It is a small hill town in the quietness of West Sikkim, with views of the Kanchenjunga range, the monasteries of ancient times, misty mornings and such a slow pace of life that wonders are slow. It is perfect for travellers who wish to have a break from the noise of everyday life without having to take a week out of their lives to be on the road. A well-planned two-day trip to Pelling can cover the best sights, offer plenty of rest and still leave room for a few surprises. And with a good selection of hotels in Pelling available at different budgets, finding a comfortable place to stay is easier than ever.

Day One: Easing Into the Mountain Rhythm

Most visitors come to Pelling from the Bagdogra Airport or New Jalpaiguri Railway Station. Depending on road conditions and traffic, the drive from either point takes about five to six hours. The journey itself is scenic and winding through tea gardens, small villages and forested hills. A popular route has a stop at Namchi, which adds a spiritual touch to the trip. In Namchi, the Char Dham complex showcases replicas of India’s four sacred shrines, while the towering statue of Guru Padmasambhava at Samdruptse Hill offers sweeping views of the surrounding valleys.

These breaks in the journey are pleasant and provide a layer of meaning to the travel experience. After arriving in Pelling, checking into one of the cosy hotels in Pelling and settling down in town is like a reward. The evening can be spent taking a quiet walk around the town, sipping hot tea and watching the mountains slowly fade into the dusk. Dinner is usually simple, warm and filling, with local dishes like thukpa or momos making regular appearances on the menu.

Day Two: Exploring Pelling’s Highlights

The second day is the day when Pelling really opens up. After a large breakfast, the sightseeing starts. A must-visit is the Pelling Skywalk. It is the first glass-bottomed skywalk in India and is located at a height of approximately 7200 feet. Walking on the transparent floor with valleys, rivers and forests visible below is both thrilling and slightly nerve-wracking, especially for those not too fond of heights. But the views are worth it. Right next to the skywalk stands the 137-foot tall statue of Chenrezig, blessed by the Dalai Lama.

The statue is encircled by golden prayer wheels and the ambiance here is peaceful and spiritual. Next on the list is the Pemayangtse Monastery, which is one of the oldest and most significant monasteries in Sikkim. The architecture is beautiful, the interiors are filled with intricate Buddhist art and the peaceful vibe makes it a lovely place to spend some quiet time. Not far from the monastery are the Rabdentse Ruins, the remains of Sikkim’s former capital. The ruins are surrounded by dense forest, and the views from here are mesmerising. Both history aficionados and photographers will like this area.

Later in the day, it is highly recommended to pay a visit to Khecheopalri Lake. This sacred lake is said to be wish-fulfilling and it is said by the locals that not a single leaf floats on the surface since they are picked off by birds. Regardless of whether that is true or not, the lake is definitely calm and surrounded by lush greenery. The day is made more relaxing by stops at Rimbi Waterfall and Kanchenjunga Waterfall on the way back. Both are easily placed and provide great photo opportunities. You can spend the evening lounging at the hotel, shopping for trinkets, or taking a walk around the area market.

Travel Tips That Actually Help

Even in the heat, it’s important to pack warm clothes. Pelling can have quite cold mornings and nights. Since most sites require some walking or climbing, comfortable walking shoes are necessary. Because cell network connection can be inconsistent, it’s a good idea to download offline maps in advance. In Pelling, cash is king. The majority of small restaurants and neighbourhood sellers prefer cash, even if some hotels and bigger shops take cards. It is recommended to bring extra cash from Bagdogra or Siliguri because the town’s few ATMs may run out of money during the busiest journey times. Better choices and rates are guaranteed when hotels in Pelling are booked in advance, especially during busy months like April, May, October, and November. For those seeking a more intimate, local experience, homestays are also great choices.

A Break That Stays With You

Pelling doesn’t overwhelm. It meets people quietly, gives freely, and lets them go with a lightened heart. Even though two days here are brief, they are frequently sufficient to clear the head and refill the heart with tranquil thoughts and mountain air.
