New Zealand’s multi-talented cricketer Glenn Phillips has been ruled out of the team’s tour of Zimbabwe after sustaining a right groin injury. The setback occurred during the final match of Major League Cricket (MLC), just days before the start of the tour.
After arriving in Zimbabwe, Phillips underwent medical evaluation, which confirmed that he would need several weeks of recovery. As a result, Tim Robinson, who had initially joined the squad as a temporary backup, will now stay on for the remainder of the T20 Tri-Series that includes South Africa.
His absence is particularly notable given his strong showing in the MLC, where he represented Washington Freedom. Over the course of 10 matches, he accumulated 186 runs at a stellar average of 62 and a strike rate nearing 140. Such performances have drawn the attention of fans on platforms like Jeetbuzz, where cricket discussions are always buzzing with anticipation for upcoming stars.
This is not the first time Phillips has been plagued by injury in 2024. Earlier this year, he was sidelined for most of the Indian Premier League (IPL) due to a similar groin strain sustained while playing as a substitute fielder for the Gujarat Titans.
The team is also without explosive batter Finn Allen, who was initially named in the squad but had to withdraw after a foot injury he picked up while turning out for the San Francisco Unicorns in the same MLC tournament.
New Zealand head coach Rob Walter expressed his disappointment at losing another key player:
“It’s really unfortunate to lose Glenn, especially alongside Finn. They’re both top-quality players who were eager to contribute. We’ll miss them out there.”
Phillips will return to New Zealand alongside fellow reserves Mitch Hay and Jimmy Neesham. The squad for the upcoming Test series against Zimbabwe will need an update, as Phillips was originally named in that group as well.
Fans on platforms like Jeetwin have already begun speculating about potential replacements and how these injuries could affect the Blackcaps’ performance moving forward.
